Study social work part-time at the KHSB

If you would like to study social work part-time in Berlin, the KHSB is the right place for you: at the university, you will benefit from a perfect mix of theory and practice. Building on your educational/healing skills, for example, you will acquire the latest scientific knowledge from social work and related sciences. This will enable you to further develop your professional profile on the basis of your practical work experience.

With the part-time Bachelor's degree programme in Social Work, we offer you an academic and at the same time practical education that will enable you to gain further or higher qualifications in the social work field.

You will acquire the theoretical knowledge and methodological tools to be able to act professionally in the various fields of social work. You will particularly benefit from the continuous practical orientation, which enables you to test and critically reflect on specialised and related scientific theories directly in the challenges of social practice.

You will also have the opportunity to set your own specialisations during your studies and thus develop your personal social professional profile. This will equip you well for a qualified job in the social field or for your further academic qualification.

Here you can get an overview of selected contents of the part-time Social Work degree programme over the course of the semester. We show you the study areas that are covered in the course of the modularised study programme. Detailed information on the specific teaching and learning content of each semester can be found in the B.A. Social Work (part-time) module handbook, which you can find under "Organisational matters" below.

Special features
The social work approach

As a social worker, you act in a responsible role between individuals, groups, society and politics. By studying at the KHSB, you will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of social work and learn to reflect on this critically. We encourage you to always keep professional ethical principles such as justice and solidarity in mind and to stand up for people who are denied opportunities to participate.

Flexible and varied study programmes

Teaching takes place in blocks of four five-day attendance weeks per semester. We support your self-study with well-structured teaching materials and a combination of face-to-face events and online learning opportunities. This gives you enough flexibility to combine your studies, career and family. A mix of lectures, seminars, excursions, tutorials and study projects guarantees you varied and stimulating study opportunities.

Combination of learning and practice

In this programme, you will learn in a consistently interdisciplinary, problem-oriented and case-related manner. Academic learning and practical experience complement each other profitably and you also benefit from intensive supervision. It is particularly important to us that you are able to contribute your professional experience and skills to teaching and develop them further in practical projects.

Programme-specific requirements

If you are studying the part-time Bachelor's degree programme in Social Work, you must be employed in social services for at least 50% of the standard working hours at your place of work. Your job must be with a recognised independent or official provider of social, health, disability, elderly or youth services.

You will find a list of possible fields of work for your professional activity under on this page.

Your employer must agree to your study programme. You must provide proof of this consent before the start of your studies and if you change employer with the employer's certificate (see under organisational matters). The form confirms that a suitable practical instructor is available to support you during your studies. The arrangement of time off for the weeks of on-site attendance is subject to individual agreement between you and your employer.

In addition to the programme-specific requirements, the general admission requirements apply.

FAQ Social Work (part-time)

Here you will find an overview of frequently asked questions about the degree programme.

No! As a state-recognised university of applied sciences, the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Berlin (KHSB) is not a private university, but a university under church sponsorship. In principle, anyone can study at the KHSB. The denominational affiliation or church membership of students is irrelevant. You are all very welcome.
