Social education campus
The Edith Stein Catholic School Centre for Social Professions (KSES) and the Catholic University of Applied Social Sciences Berlin (KHSB) form the social education campus in Berlin-Karlshorst.
The joint use of the listed building is intended to strengthen co-operation in training in the fields of social work, health, education and training (SAGE).
Origin - how it all began
The rooms intended for the KSES in the listed old building of the former hospital in Karlshorst were specially adapted to the needs of the school centre. From the conversion and new construction to the move-in, everything proceeded at an impressively fast pace so that the school centre could be put into operation on time for the 2025/2026 school year.
An incredible amount has been achieved since 2024: rooms have been redesigned, doors moved, windows replaced, floors and walls reworked, a new lift planned, monument protection and fire safety requirements taken into account, disabled access designed and much more.
The iconic floor tiles were commissioned from the original tile manufacturer and fired according to the original designs and the old windows of the former food counter were restored.
Modern digital equipment, multifunctional classrooms and meeting zones create a learning environment that optimally supports the training of future specialists in social work.
A tour of the construction site was a great opportunity for KHSB and KSES employees to experience the progress on site. Between all the construction dust, there were many exciting insights into what has been achieved and what is planned until the KSES employees move in in September 2025.
Impressions of the
After the move in the summer holidays, KSES will train educators and social assistants for the first time at the new location in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The students and trainees of the KHSB and the school centre will share the building and grounds from the start of the 2025/2026 school year.
KSES - Two schools under one roof
The Edith Stein Catholic School Centre offers two state-recognised study options.
The vocational school for social pedagogy offers a three-year full-time or part-time study programme that prepares students to work as educators and lays the foundation for a professional future based on social responsibility and pedagogical commitment.
The vocational school for social assistance offers a two-year programme that trains state-certified social assistants.
There is also the opportunity to acquire the extended vocational training qualification (eBBR) or the secondary school leaving certificate (MSA).
The Edith Stein Catholic School Centre promotes young talents and enables them to enter the diverse world of social work. You can find more information on the website.
Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Berlin
With the move, the Archdiocese of Berlin, as joint sponsor, is pursuing the declared goal of strengthening the social sector in the long term, and KSES and KHSB are consolidating their role as central institutions in Berlin's social education sector. With the expanded campus, the sponsor is bundling educational expertise at one location and creating a learning environment that combines modern pedagogy, technical innovation and Christian values. At the Karlshorst campus, KSES students also benefit from the university's existing learning environment, such as the canteen and public library, and gain an insight into other (further) education programmes and study subjects.
