Study social work at the KHSB

If you would like to study social work in Berlin, the KHSB is the right place for you: at the university, you will benefit from a perfect mix of theory and practice. You will acquire the latest scientific knowledge from the field of social work and related sciences.

Equipped with this knowledge, you will gain valuable practical professional experience during your studies. You will learn to adopt a research-based approach. This will enable you to critically reflect on and further develop both the profession and the academic discipline of social work. As a social worker, you will make an important contribution to society in the spirit of solidarity.

At the same time, the degree offers you a wide range of career prospects in areas with a high demand for specialists. What are you particularly interested in: children, young people or families in challenging situations? Older people, people with addictions or a history of flight or migration? Or how our society can be made sustainable and resilient?

The B.A. Social Work is a degree programme in which you set your own specialist focus. On the way to graduation, you will sharpen your personal professional profile. At the KHSB, you will receive the ideal foundation for a targeted career entry or your academic further education.

Here you can get an overview of selected contents of the Social Work degree programme over the course of the semester. We show you the study areas that are covered in the course of the modularised study programme. Detailed information on the specific teaching and learning content of each semester can be found in the B.A. Social Work module handbook, which you can find under "Organisational matters" below.

Special features
Arriving at university

At the beginning of your degree programme, we support you in a specialist academic workshop. In small, topic-centred groups, you will develop standards and techniques for academic work. You will develop your own projects from your ideas and questions. In this way, you will build up key competences for your studies and practice and be introduced to the fields of social work in a structured way.

Reflecting responsibility

As a social worker, you act in a responsible role between individuals, groups, society and politics. By studying at the KHSB, you will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of social work and learn to reflect on this critically. We want to strengthen your ability to always keep professional ethical principles such as justice and solidarity in mind and to stand up for people who are denied opportunities to participate.

Set priorities

The special profile of the degree programme includes project studies in the 5th and 6th semesters. You can choose your specialisation and gain specific practical experience. You will deepen your knowledge and skills from theory and practice in independently designed projects. The focus can be, for example, on sustainability, criticism of racism, leadership, neighbourhood work, health promotion, gender/diversity, family/lifestyle-related social work, interculturality, health promotion or participation.
