Collaboration in research projects
We also offer you the opportunity to actively participate in our research projects as a student assistant. Antonius*Price
To promote young academics, up to two outstanding theses by Bachelor's and Master's students are published annually at the KHSB with the Antonius*Prize in cooperation with Tectum Verlag. These are then published in the series"Young Academics: KHSB publications on social participation".
Cooperative promotion
At the KHSB, it is possible to obtain a doctorate as part of a cooperative doctorate. In the case of a cooperative doctorate, the doctorate is supervised by a supervisor at a university and a supervisor at the KHSB.the doctoral degree is awarded by the supervising university.
The admission requirements, general conditions, requirements and any accompanying doctoral or qualification programmes are based on the relevant doctoral regulations of the supervising universities.
Promotion centre
In Berlin, the Senate Department responsible for universities can grant universities of applied sciences the right to award doctorates for doctoral centres in research fields in which they have demonstrated sufficient research strength over a period of several years.the KHSB is currently in the process of establishing such a doctoral centre in the field of SAGE disciplines.
Teaching experience
Lecturers at the KHSB play a central role in academic teaching. They bring valuable practical experience and expertise to the courses and thus enrich the students' education. Lecturers are often practitioners who teach courses alongside their professional activities, which enables theory and practice to be closely interlinked. This provides students with a sound, practice-orientated education.

Professorship at the KHSB
A professorship at the KHSB Berlin offers practice-orientated teaching, research and tasks in university management. It is characterised by personal and temporal freedom.
The appointment procedure for a professorship at the KHSB is a carefully structured process that aims to identify and attract the most qualified and committed candidates. Applicants go through a multi-stage selection process that includes a written application, a trial lecture and interviews. These steps enable the selection committee to assess and evaluate the candidate's professional expertise, teaching skills and suitability for the specific requirements of the advertised professorship. Particular emphasis is placed on practical experience and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, which are of great importance to the KHSB.
Examination of the application documents
After the application deadline, the chairperson of the appointed appointment committee checks the formal requirements. In cases of doubt and applications received after the deadline, the committee decides on the admission of applicants. The appointment committee then examines the academic qualifications and suitability for the advertised position on the basis of the documents, in particular with regard to the requirements stipulated in the advertisement.
When appointing visiting professorships, the Vice President for Studies and Teaching chairs a selection committee, which includes a professor who is subject-related to the position to be filled with the visiting professorship, a representative of the academic staff, teaching staff for special tasks or lecturers and a student.
Invitation to the trial course
As a rule, the chairperson invites a maximum of six applicants to a trial teaching event at the majority proposal of the appointment committee. At least one applicant should be considered. The subject, type and title of the trial course shall be determined by the appointment committee. If the appointment committee does not determine the subject or title of the course, the applicant may submit proposals.
In the case of a visiting professorship, there is no trial course. After reviewing the application documents, suitable applicants will be invited to an interview with the selection committee with at least 14 days' notice.
Realisation of trial course
The trial teaching event takes place in public at the university and lasts a maximum of 75 minutes in total. The appointment committee determines whether the event is to be held as a specialist lecture, as a course involving the students present or as a combination of both elements. The lecture is followed by a discussion with the appointment committee lasting a maximum of 45 minutes.
In the case of a visiting professorship, an interview is held with the selection committee.
List capability and expert opinions
After hearing all applicants, the appointment committee decides which of them are eligible for listing. Those applicants will be asked to submit two external reviews of their academic achievements. The documents must be accompanied by a declaration that the external reviewers are not excluded or that there are no concerns of bias. Internal reviews for applicants eligible for the list are prepared by the designated professorial members of the appointment committee.
In the case of a visiting professorship, the selection committee proposes a suitable candidate to the President for appointment as a visiting professor. If there are several suitable candidates, a list of a maximum of three candidates will be drawn up.
Selection
The list proposal agreed by a majority of the appointment committee is submitted to the Academic Senate. After discussion, the Senate decides on a list with up to three names of applicants. The decision is then forwarded with the applicants' documents to the Board of Trustees, which proposes an applicant for the professorship to the Archbishop of Berlin. The approval of the responsible Senate Department remains unaffected.
The approval of the Senate Administration must also be obtained for a visiting professorship. The Academic Senate will be informed of the selection procedure.
Appointment to a professorship
Once all steps have been completed, the Archbishop of Berlin appoints the new professorship at the KHSB. The President ceremonially presents the successful candidate with the certificate of appointment.
In the case of a visiting professorship, the President appoints the candidate proposed and confirmed by the Senate Administration as a visiting professor. This is for a limited period of time and ends when the time limit expires.
The new colleague is therefore very welcome at the KHSB!
