Main research areas

Our research is primarily application-orientated in the SAGE field. SAGE stands for Social Work, Health, Education and Training. In addition to applied research, basic research is also part of our research profile.

Our six key research areas are:

  • Social ethics, ethics of social professional action and ethics counselling,
  • Community work and community organising,
  • Social health,
  • Gender and diversity research,
  • Inclusion and participation,
  • Development of applied research methods.

Close cooperation with practitioners is often central to our research. Research-related collaboration takes place in the preparation and implementation of research projects. The evaluation of already implemented approaches and the development of new concepts for action are also part of the KHSB's research profile.

Participation research

Our research is united by the question of how all people can participate better in society. Social professions are committed to doing just that: they support people in becoming politically, economically, socially and culturally involved. Our aim is to use our research to help promote participation and inclusion for socially disadvantaged groups. In many cases, this involves processes of inclusion and exclusion.

Scientists at the KHSB realise participation research as applied research in cooperation with practical institutions in Berlin and beyond. Our research also includes basic research in the humanities and social sciences in this field. Social participation is also a topic of the KHSB's advisory activities for practice organisations and politics.
